Functional Safety

The goal of functional safety (FS) is to keep the risks posed by machinery to an acceptable minimum. KEB offers a full range of FS products from emergency brakes, to SIL3 VFDs, to Safety PLCs. All safety products are certified by 3rd Party TUV agencies.

Functional Safety (FS) drives

SIL3 Safe-Torque-Off (STO) are standard on 6th generation drive hardware.

Safety Module 1 adds Safe-Brake-Control (SBC) which provides a safe 24V supply for brake operation. Periodically, the drive checks the function of the internal brake transistor.

Safety Module 3 features safe motion functionality according to IEC 61800-5-2. Advanced motion-based safety functionality is possible in the drive. This improves reaction time in e-stop scenarios and lowers costs by reducing separate protective devices.

Module 3 also offers Fail Safe over EtherCAT (FSoE) functionality where STO and all other KEB-supported safety functions can be controlled via the bus. This amounts to huge savings in wiring. Additionally, safety levels (e.g. limits) can be changed. Safe actual speed and position can be transferred via the safe process data.

Integral gearmotors, servo motors, and brakes

KEB Integral gearmotors come with induction or servo motors. Customers can choose from four styles of efficient gearing. SIL2 encoder options are available, as well as the option to add a spring-set brake with a microswitch.

Our TA Series of servo motors offers a powerful, compact design with up to 82 Nm of nominal torque. They operate with a spring-set brake and have safe feedback options. Absolute multi-turn is available, safe in single turn range.

The redundant, fail-safe design of our spring-set (spring-applied) brakes provides power-off brake engagement. The optional hand release and microswitch for positive acting engagement feedback make the brakes an excellent complement to our motors and gearmotors.
